adewale-akinnuoye-agbaje-as-malko-in-game-of-thrones-season-5The show is essentially about the wars between the Seven Kingdoms and competing for power and control. Malko is a recurring character in the fifth season played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. He makes his debut in “Unbowed, Unbent, Unbroken”. Malko is the Emir of a ship operating in Slaver’s Bay and the Summer Sea. He speaks the Lingua Franca of Westeros and is thoroughly learned in Westerosi history, such as events like Robert’s Rebellion and the Siege of Pyke. In Season 5, Malko’s ship anchors on the shoreline while on a voyage to Volantis so his crew can replenish their water supply.

They discover Jorah Mormont and Tyrion Lannister and capture them. At this time there is a warrant for tyrions arrest by his own family for the death of his nephew the King. Once he has arrived in Slaver’s Bay, Malko proceeds to auction off Jorah while changing details to make his story sound more impressive (and to get a higher price), including Jorah killing Khal Drogo (instead of Qotho) and taking part in the attack on “Spike” while wielding a flaming sword (instead of Thoros of Myr). He manages to sell Jorah to Yezzan and Tyrion.

thronesIn response to a fan’s comment on his blog, George R.R. Martin has promised some “characters of color” in his upcoming “The Winds of Winter,” the next book in “A Song of Ice and Fire.”In June, a fan asked Martin: “There are a white race, a black race in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire, and many other races. Why there is no Asian race (Chinese-like, Japanese-like) in the Game of Thrones show and ASOIAF books?” Martin replied: Well, Westeros is the fantasy analogue of the British Isles in its world, so it is a long long way from the Asia analogue. There weren’t a lot of Asians in Yorkish England either. Martin, is obviously aware that Moors were in the British Isles during the periods of Yorkish England and well before that.
