“Captain America: Civil War” released another trailer for the upcoming film showing new footage from the highly anticipated superhero team up.
With just two months to go before the most highly anticipated, and longest, installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) drops, the studio released another new trailer for “Captain America: Civil War.” While this isn’t the first look fans have received of the upcoming superhero team up, the reveal of a new cast member makes it the most interesting one yet.
As previously reported, the second “Captain America” sequel will have more Marvel heroes than the typical “Avengers” film as the universe gets divided over the subject of superhuman registration. Based on a 2006 comic book storyline of the same name, “Civil War” will pit Captain America (Chris Evans) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) against each other and a team of their respective allies.
The most talked about moment of the new trailer will no doubt be the first introduction of Spider-Man ahead of his standalone movie, but we’ll get to that later. To help make sure die hard MCU fans didn’t miss a beat of this action-packed trailer, below is a rundown of all the most interesting bits you may have missed.
The Road So Far (0:20)
As we all know, the government decides that it’s time to start regulating superheroes after the events in Sokovia during “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” However, the trailer begins with an outline of all the other events in the MCU that would have reasonably led the public to believe that they can’t let superheroes move about unregulated, including the Chitauri invasion in “Avengers” and the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. at the Triskelion in Washington D.C. in “Captain America: Winter Soldier.” In the previous trailer, Thaddeus Ross laid the stakes of the Sokovia Accords to the team, but the latest reveals that Stark is there with him to lend his support saying: “We need to be put in check. Whatever form that takes, I’m game.”
Super-Secret Underwater Prison? (0:50)
As fans of the comic book version of the “Civil War” storyline will note, a big part of it had to do with Stark’s development of a high-tech prison that would be able to contain any heroes that were captured for disobeying the Superhuman Registration Act. It was unclear if that part of the story would play a role in the movie, but the trailer shows a mysterious underwater structure that appears to be a circular prison. A defeated-looking Stark stands in the middle of the detention area surrounded by empty cells. Could this mean that the billionaire inventor has plans for Team Cap should his side win?
Black Panther In Action (1:00)
This isn’t the first look we’ve seen of Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) in “Civil War” promotions. However, it is one of the first times we see him in action. Throughout the trailer he can be seen relentlessly pursuing The Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan) for a yet undisclosed crime. As previously reported, the hero is the leader of the fictional African nation of Wakanda, and we know that The Winter Soldier has a track record of upsetting entire nations. So, their tiff likely has something to do with the former Hydra soldier’s antics.
The Fall of War Machine (1:15)
It was previously revealed that during the battle amongst teams, Iron Man’s longtime friend James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) will suffer a serious injury. It looked like he’d had his arc reactor ripped out, but the new trailer reveals that he’s shot out of the sky by an unknown weapon. He falls a long way to Earth and when his buddy retrieves him, it’s unclear if he’s alive or dead. Inan interview in January, the actor revealed that his character will have a pivotal arc in the upcoming film, so his fate is anyone’s guess at this point.
Ant-Man In Action (1:53)
Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) has only been teased a little bit in the upcoming film. The newest member of the MCU will find his way to Team Cap and the trailer finally puts him in action along with his new ally Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). The archer fires a trick arrow and Ant-Man is clinging to it for dear life as he uses it’s trajectory to board Iron Man’s armor. Clearly “Civil War” is planning to utilize the new hero in a big way when the time comes for a brawl.
“I Could Do This All Day” (1:57)
“Stay down, final warning” a clearly upset Iron Man says.
In response, his opponent, Captain America, utters his famous catchphrase from his first solo movie, “The First Avenger,” telling the red and gold-clad hero that he can “do this all day.” It’s a fun wink to fans but it also hints at where Cap’s loyalties lie in the fight. When push comes to shove (literally) he’s calling on his old history with his friend Bucky (Stan) rather than his new ally Tony.
At Long Last… Spider-Man (2:11)
Finally, after months and months of waiting, actor Tom Holland made his first appearance as the iconic wall-crawler Spider-Man. Although many fans speculated about it, the trailer also reveals who the web-slinger will be siding with in the conflict. The hero snags Cap’s shield and binds his hands with webbing at the mere call of Stark. However, it’s worth mentioning that the comic book version of the story saw Spidey change sides halfway through the war, so really anything is possible.
